Why vaccinate?

If you knew you were going to be exposed to dangerous diseases, you would get vaccinated to protect yourself. Vaccination against diseases has helped save millions of lives of animals aropund the world!

Vaccinating your pet protects them against a range of diseases, some of which have no cure. This means that, should your pet become infected, they may die.

Vaccines work by showing your pet a killed or weakened version of the disease to be protected against. Your pet's immune system learns what these diseases look like, and can then defend itself by producing antibodies if the real thing comes along at a later date.

Sadly, there are still a large number of pets out there who aren't vaccinated and are at continuous risk. Preventative healthcare, such as vaccination, is vital in helping to ensure that your pet stays healthy and lives a long and happy life with you.

It's also worth remembering that kennels and catteries should ask for up-to-date vaccinations before letting your pet stay with them.

What do we vaccinate against?

Different species require vaccination against different diseases.

Dogs

  • Parvovirus - Often fatal.
  • Distemper - Can cause seizures, fits and death
  • Canine hepatitis - Can cause jaundice and death.
  • Leptospirosis - Can cause damage to major organs (kidney and liver) and death.
  • Kennel cough - Rarely fatal but very unpleasant and highly contagious.

Cats

  • Feline leukaemia - Usually fatal.
  • Panleucopaenia - Frequently fatal.
  • Feline chlamydia - can cause conjunctivitis and blindness.
  • Cat flu - Young, immune-suppressed or elderly cats may die as a result of contracting flu.

Dogs & Cats

In India, rabies is a serious concern and it is very important to vaccinate your pet against rabies. This must be done routinely once a year to ensure your pet is safe against this deadly disease. You will also need to get your pet vaccinated for rabies if you plan on traveling abroad with it. Please enquire with our vets on our vaccination schedules.

Health checks

Pets have a much shorter lifespan than people and a lot of things can change in a pet's body, even in the space of one year. Every health check is an opportunity for us to perform a nose-to-tail check, as your pet cannot tell us how they feel. Ensuring your pet has regular health checks and up-to-date vaccinations is a vital part of keeping them fit and healthy.

What does your vet check for in a regular health check?

  • Eyes and ears - Any discharge, soreness, redness or itching.
  • Mouth - Colour and condition of gums, condition of teeth, signs of ulcers, unusual odours and any lumps or swellings.
  • Chest - Coughing, shortness of breath, irregular heart sounds, lung sounds and breathing rate.
  • Skin and coat - Evidence of parasites, allergies, infections, hair loss, discolouration, lumps and bumps.
